    UNDERSTANDING ADHD

    More than inattention.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning. ADHD presents differently across individuals and often does not match the stereotypical image of a hyperactive child.

Many adults, particularly women and gender-diverse individuals, experience ADHD primarily as difficulty sustaining attention, emotional regulation challenges, and chronic feelings of underachievement. These presentations are frequently missed or misdiagnosed for years.

    COMMON SIGNS

Difficulty sustaining attention on tasks or activities

Frequently losing items or forgetting appointments

Starting many projects but struggling to finish them

Impulsive decision-making or speaking without thinking

Restlessness, fidgeting, or difficulty sitting still

Emotional dysregulation and low frustration tolerance

Executive functioning difficulties: planning, organising, prioritising

Chronic procrastination despite genuine intention to act

Hyperfocus on engaging tasks while neglecting others

Difficulty with time management and underestimating how long tasks take

    ADHD PRESENTATIONS

    ADHD looks different for everyone.

    Predominantly inattentive

Difficulty sustaining attention, following through on tasks, and organising activities, without prominent hyperactivity. Often missed in assessment, particularly in women and girls.

    Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive

Restlessness, difficulty staying seated, talking excessively, and acting before thinking. More commonly recognised in childhood but may persist into adulthood.

    Combined presentation

Both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive features are present. This is the most common presentation in adults seeking formal diagnosis.
