    UNDERSTANDING AUTISM

A spectrum of experience and strength.

Autism (autism spectrum disorder, or ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in social communication, sensory processing, and patterns of thinking and behaviour. Autism is a spectrum. Presentations vary significantly across individuals, and many autistic people have significant strengths alongside the challenges that bring them to seek support.

Many autistic adults are assessed later in life, often after years of masking, adapting their behaviour to fit neurotypical expectations in ways that can be exhausting and lead to burnout. Women and gender-diverse individuals are frequently under-identified, as autism in these groups often presents differently to the stereotypical profile.

A formal assessment can provide clarity, access to support services, and a framework for understanding your own experience in a new light. Our approach is affirming and recognises both the challenges and the strengths associated with being autistic.

    COMMON CHARACTERISTICS

Differences in social communication and interaction, including difficulties with unspoken social rules, small talk, or reading others' emotions

Sensory sensitivities or sensory-seeking behaviours, such as sensitivity to sound, light, texture, or smell

Strong preferences for routine and predictability, with significant distress when routines are disrupted

Deep, sustained interests in specific topics or activities, often pursued with exceptional focus

Difficulties with executive functioning, including planning, flexibility, and transitioning between tasks

These characteristics exist on a spectrum and will look different for every autistic person. A formal assessment provides the clarity that self-identification alone cannot.

    THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS

    A thorough, affirming evaluation.

Our ASD assessments are comprehensive, evidence-based, and conducted in a way that honours your experience. The goal is clarity, not judgement.

    01

    Initial clinical interview

A comprehensive clinical interview covering your developmental history, current functioning, social and sensory experiences, and any prior diagnoses or assessments. This forms the foundation of the assessment.

    02

    Psychometric testing

Validated psychometric instruments are used to assess cognitive profile, adaptive functioning, and ASD-specific features. Testing is conducted across two to three appointments depending on the scope of the assessment.

    03

    Collateral information

Where possible and with your consent, we gather information from a third party such as a partner, parent, or close friend. This provides additional context and strengthens diagnostic accuracy.

    04

    Written report and feedback

You receive a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions, and tailored recommendations. A feedback session is included to walk through the results and answer your questions.
